Joselyn Dumas grows up in Juliet Asante movie, Silverain

image

Film producer, Juliet Asante puts together an
international cast from five different African
countries in which popular TV presenter
Joselyn Dumas finally grows in her casting
roles as she plays Kayayoo in the great new
film, ‘Silverain’.
It stars Enyinaa Nwigwe, Uru Eke (Nigeria),
Michael Bassey (Sierra Leone), Annabel Mbaru
(Kenya), Chumani Pan (South Africa), Elikem
Kumordzi, Kofi Buckner, Ofie Kodjo all from
Ghana.
Romantic movies are too easy for the likes of
Jocelyn so you would be thrilled to see the TV
presenter stretch herself a little bit looking
ordinary, tattered and humbled.
With a movie industry getting tired of banal
romantic movies, Juliet Asante inches up the
industry’s creative bandwidth with a movie
themed around the politics of social exclusion
and laced with a decent whiff of romance.
The movie is woven around a real social
question – What are the chances that an
orphaned teenager living on the streets of
Accra, can claw her way out of poverty without
selling out?
In the movie set in squalors of Accra, Joselyn
played as Ajoa and her kayayoo friends
struggle to make a living while shrugging off
city authorities bent on beautifying the city by
eliminating these sprawling representatives of
poverty.
Ajoa by some twist of fate claws her plight
into the conscience of the elite son of the
Speaker of Parliament, Bruce played by
Nigerian actor Enyinna Nwigwe.
Initially reluctant, he goes out of his way to
lift the wretched head porter out of crushing
weight of lack so that Ajoa can now live some
distance away from the poverty and want she
has known all her life.
Although jobless, she can now wear fancy
clothes, eat good food and sleep without fear
of mosquitoes or masked robbers and rapists.
But businessman Bruce in pulling out the
street girl may have pulled her a little too far,
as Ajoa gets lodged into a place in his heart,
setting off a drama that rips through deep
friendships, expectant fiancés, big business
and Bruce’s own prospects as heir.
You would have thought that this is one
Cinderella story but you would be wrong, as
Juliet Asante employs some tact and creativity
that leaves you pondering the fate of five great
cast members.
Juliet Asante at a media preview of the film,
said that ‘Silverain’ was inspired by a true
story she personally experienced while trying
to help a kayayoo.
The movie, set to collect some awards sooner
than later, will premiere on the 13th March at
Accra Mall and on the 14th March at West
Hills Mall.
Sir Sam Jonah and Mr. Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah
are expected to grace the unveiling of the
movie in an Executive premiere on the 27th
February.

VGMA NOMINEE LIST WILL BE OUT SOON

image

The journey to music’s biggest night in Ghana,
began with a call for nominations which was
answered by musicians from all genres and
this paved the way for the Vodafone Ghana
Music Awards(VGMA) Board to commence
sitting.
The Board had the tortuous task of reviewing
hundreds of entries, categorizing and
shortlisting them into the various categories
to be awarded. After many hours of board
deliberations and numerous sittings, the 2015
VGMA Board has completed its work and it’s
ready to make public, the nominees list for
this year’s event.
The excitement and anxiety is building up, the
wait and the guess work of who will be
nominated for what and who will miss the
train would be over in a few days. The event is
set to take place at the plush La Palm Royal
Beach Hotel this Friday 27th February.
The event, strictly by invitation, is a preview of
what to expect at the main event in terms of
organization and it will be attended by a tall
list of A-List guests who will comprise of the
crème de la crème in the entertainment
industry, artistes and some hundred fans of
VGMA selected from various VGMA social
media activation.
The theme for this year’s VGMAs is ‘IGNITED
BY PASSION’ which seeks to celebrate the
passion and love of the Event by the 25million
music fans in Ghana who have remained
faithful to the scheme over the past sixteen
years. This will be done by involving them
fully in all aspects of the Festival’s activities
starting from the launch and right through to
the main awards night. Selection will be
mainly done via social media.
This year’s event has seen some major
changes already, the inclusion of a Reggae/
Dancehall Artiste of the year and the re-
definition of the New Artiste of the year as
well as Music Video Directing categories.
Organizers maintain that these changes have
been made based on a general review of the
scheme consistent with its mantra of keeping
the scheme fresh and in synch with current
trends.
According to the organisers, Charterhouse,
this year’s launch is a combined launch and
Nominees Party and if previous launches are
anything to go by, one can expect a classy red
carpet event which will preceded the actual
program, a well decorated walk way to the
event grounds on the theme, ignited by
passion, lots of paparazzi, socialization and
partying with stars. The event is expected to
be on full of glitz and glamour.
The road to the most anticipated event on the
GH entertainment calendar would be cleared in
a few days, we may not know who will get cut
or who will be nominated for what at this
moment but one thing is for certain, the
controversy over who should have been
nominated and who shouldn’t have been will
begin soon after the list of nominees list is
released.
However, in the midst of all the controversies
don’t forget to vote for your favorite artistes
should they make the cut.

KKD NEEDS PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSIL

image

Doctors treating Kwasi Kyei Darkwah (KKD)
have recommended psychological counselling
for the embattled fashion icon who is standing
trial for rape.
This was after the ace broadcaster failed to
show up in court for the second time running
due to ill health.
His lawyers produced his medical report
before the court to authenticate their claims of
his poor state of health.
However, Starr News’ Wilberforce Asare who
was in court Thursday, reports that the State
prosecutor in-charge of the case, Cynthia
Lamptey was furious over the fact that she
was not given a copy of the medical report
before today’s hearing.
The case has been adjourned to February
18,2015.
State prosecutors have accused KKD of
forcibly having sex with Ewureffe Orleans
Thompson in a hotel washroom, although he
insists the act was consensual.
Even though the 19-year-old lady says she
wants to discontinue the case, and the
accused has also apologised to the lady
publicly, state prosecutors are bent on seeking
legal redress for the alleged crime.
Prosecutors had earlier questioned the
authenticity of that letter purported to have
been written by Ms. Thompson.

Kwaw Kesse Throws More Light on his Prison Ordeal

image

Hip-Life musician, Kwaw kese, has thrown
light on his experience at the Kumasi Central
Prison, where he was remanded for allegedly
possessing narcotics.
The award-winning artiste shared his
experience Tuesday on Accra-based Joy FM’s
‘Super Morning Show’.
Read Kwaw Kese’s account below:
“I slept in a cell with about 70 people. This
was like a normal single room. There were
only 3 beds which were reserved for the cell
leaders. We lie on the floor, packed like yam.
They will ask if you want to sleep the yam
sleeping or the monkey sleeping.
With the yam sleeping, they are packed like
sardines. The monkey sleeping, you sleep with
your legs on your chest.
People have done that for so many years and
they are just there, on remand. The toilet is in
the centre of the room. It showed me
something – the people are so clean; the room
didn’t smell.
In the night, people ease themselves and at 6
am in the morning, the toilet is opened.
Imagine about 800 people in the remand
prison using only 4 toilet facilities.
It is full to the brim and faeces fall on the
floor. Someone pounds it like fufu. This is the
same place that people sit to cook and bath.
It’s crazy. It was there that I realized that I
am in a different planet; the way human
beings are being treated.
There is this banku that is dropped in the sun
and if you like it, you go for it.
you see that the people who go for this food
are hopeless.
The soup will come in the next 3 or 4 hours. I
don’t know why it’s this way. If you are being
paid Ghc 1.40 a day, what do you do with
that? Not all of them come out and get the
chance to come on radio and tell their story.
This is inhumane. I spoke to someone who
was 70. He said he was going from the farm
and saw police chasing some people like they
were smoking and the police ambushed them.
He doesn’t know his offence. He has been
there for 3 months.
Some people have been there for 3-4 years
because they don’t have anyone to take them
to court. The prisons are like a hospital.
Anybody can end up there. If it’s meant for us,
we should feel a bit comfortable when we are
there. Ibrahim Adam and former president
Kufuor have been there before.
Not everybody in prison is a bad person or a
criminal. It’s a correctional facility, not a
dungeon. If it turns into a dungeon, it may
come back to haunt us.
I want to share love with the prisoners on
Valentine’s Day and put smiles on their faces.
I want everybody to come on board.
They need us. People should think about this
and try to support and make the prisoners
happy people. To the youth in Ghana, I would
like to say, focus on whatever field they are in.
do whatever you can to stay out of prison.”

Court Throws Away Ambolley’s case

image

An Accra High Court yesterday dismissed a
case filed by Gyedu Blay Ambolley and two
others to place an injunction on the Ghana
Music Right Organisation (GHAMRO) elections
scheduled for today.
Ambolley, C.K. Morrison and Ama Afriyie were
in court with their counsel, Lawyer B. Eshun,
to seek for an ex-parte interim injunction to
restrain GHAMRO and its Receiver Managers
from conducting today’s elections.
The complainants cited late submission of
polls and expiration of time as their reasons
for the action but GHAMRO’s lawyer, Opoku
Adusei, opposed the motion and argued that
notices of polls were served as far back as
January 7 and even published in the national
dailies.
The court, presided over by His Lordship
Justice Anthony Oppong, dismissed the
application to pave way for the elections.
Tuesday’s development followed an earlier
postponement of the elections from December
6, 2014 to February 11 due to an interlocutory
injunction sought from the court by Rex
Boateng and George Dickson, among others, to
allow all individual stakeholders pick forms,
contest and campaign for the vacant
positions.
With this development, all is set for the
GHAMRO elections today. All music right
owners are expected to cast their votes at
CIBT-Social Advance (Adjacent Teachers Hall)
in Accra, Apatakese Ase in Kumasi and the
Cultural Centre in Tamale.
Last year a Human Rights Court setup the
interim board to operate for six months, with
the task of receiving, managing royalties on
behalf of the right owners and seeing to the
appointment of a permanent board for
GHAMRO.
As it stands, music maestro Kojo Antwi will be
going unopposed for the chairmanship
position of GHAMRO while the rest vie for the
vice chairman (producer), vice chairman
(composer), board member (producer) and
board member (composer) positions.
After the votes are counted and the results
announced, the interim board at GHAMRO will
swear in the elected board on February 27.

I have balls for new music

image

Multiple hit recording artist, Kontihene on
e.TV’sThe Late Nite Celebrity Show talked
about his Yaa Pono featured D3d33d3 and
having the balls to record songs he can relate
to now.
The Esi rapper answering Giovani’s question
on why he switched the content of his music
to storytelling and good content said;
“These days you sound like an old man if you
try to advice someone. If you want to put out
music that will last; an instance is Asesa,
which is sixteen years old but I can still relate
to. But I have some songs that I can’t relate
to today, I wouldn’t be proud to even perform
them myself. I have a song that I don’t want
to even hear now because the messages are
not relevant to me today. Some of the songs
that I use to write, record and perform, I can’t
relate to them now.
“Don’t get me wrong, they were all good
songs back then but if you have a good song
with good content, years will come and go and
the messages will still be relevant. That’s why,
a lot of people still listen to Bob Marley
because the message is still relevant.
“These days we want to dance and the more
you prolong on dishing out good messages.
People don’t want to hear it.
“But I have big balls and I want to put
relevant messages into my music.” He
concluded.

Musician Kontihene has hinted of a new song
he is set to release sometime this week.
Born, Emmanuel Nana Appiah, the award-
winning musician has remained relevant in the
Ghanaian music industry since the release of
his smash hit, Aketesia, in the early 2000s.
Kontihene, also affectionately called #Ohene,
has asked fans and music lovers to get ready
for his latest hit this week.
An excited #Ohene took to his Facebook page
to give details of the song titled #Dedeede.
#Dedeede will be released just in time for the
Valentine’s Day and it’s set to rule the
airwaves.
According to him, the video for the song is
almost ready and would be released as soon
as possible.
Kontihene is one of the finest performers in
Ghana and adjudged one of the best
performers in Ghana in 2014 after his
impressive performances on numerous
platforms during the Christmas and New Year.
He has promised fans and music lovers a year
of good music and is set to deliver more
astounding performances in 2015.
