The Darkuman Kokompe Market has been
razed down following a fire outbreak late
Saturday.
The spare parts section of the market was the
worst affected as the fire destroyed properties
worth thousands of cedis.
The personnel of the Ghana National Fire
Service (GNFS) had a challenging time
dousing the fire due to the spare parts burning
in the fire.
The GNFS also had difficulty gaining access to
the market due to the haphazard nature the
stalls and shops were situated.
According to an eyewitness, the fire was
caused by a broken down electrical pole in the
area.
He told Citi News that they had on several
occasions reported to the appropriate
authorities but nothing had been done about
it.
The eyewitness who lost his cousin in the fire
said his cousin got electrocuted by the faulty
electrical pole.
The market is a major trading area operated
mainly by auto mechanics and spare parts
dealers.
With barely three weeks into the year 2015,
there have been countless fire outbreaks.
Notable amongst them are the burning down
of the Central Medical stores in Tema, the
Melcom warehouse at the Industrial area in
Accra, a shell filling station in Kumasi.
Also some persons including children have
been burnt to death when fire gutted their
homes in Koforidua, Half Assini and Osu in
Accra.
